We often use the word 'Lord' in what we say, write or sing, in doing so we are in danger of becoming too familiar with the One who ever has been and ever will be, the great Holy One, the One who created all things. In the Old Testament, the vast majority of times the word we are considering is printed in upper capitols as LORD.But in the New Testament it is printed in upper and lower capitols as Lord, now we must consider why this is so.So many things have been changed by publishersin the numerous versions of the Bible that are now available, but I hope this word is always printed in the way we have accepted for years
For a few moments let's consider this matter
The great eternal God always has been, He is also a 'father' God, created mankind and desired fellowship with them, but this was broken by the disobedience of those He created. All through the ages, throughout the powerful civilizations this great God has desired to get through to mankind. He has been known by different names and I am going to dwell on the time when He comfronted Moses at The Burning Bush.Moses was a Jew by birth, but had been educated, his mind developed in the Egyptian culture, trained for life in the Courts of Pharaoh and was veryfamiliar with the ways of the folks in Egypt and they were an advanced civilization. At a certain time in the life of Moses as he lived in Egypthe actually killed an Egyptian, because of this he fled to Midian and was a shepherd for forty years for the flock of Jethro. That time was not wasted in God's economy, in the Scriptures a period of 'forty' whether this is years, weeks or days was a time of preparation, yes God was preparing Moses for his work. This work was to take the Israelites out of bondage in Egypt, life was so cheap at one time the midwives were instructed to kill any boys born in their car.Neither did they have a military power and it was God's plan to guide them back to their land of promise so that our Lord Jesus could be born there as prophesied
During this period in the life of Moses he was tending his sheep and there was a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush, this bush burned but it was not consumed. As the good man drew near a voice spoke to him saying, 'Take off thy shoes for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground'.The one who spoke was the great YAHWEH, none other than The LORD God Almighty. This was as I understand the first time the great God revealed Himself to a person by this name YAHWEH, the One who was and is the great 'I AM' that 'I AM'.From what I have been given to understand our word LORD comes from this old title for our God.The folks of old had such reverence for their God, that as a scribe wrote the name YAHWEH, he would pick up a special stylus that was only used for writing His name, there must not to be any imperfections in the script at all.So let us remember as we read the word LORD in the Old Testament it refers to The LORD God Almighty in the vastness of His being, God The Father, God The Son and God The Holy Spirit.May we all have due reverence in everything for the One great LORD God Almighty
In this special experience Moses had, he was commissioned for his work
Please observe only a few times is the word 'Lord' printed in this way in the Old Testament, this is because it comes from a different root in the Hebrew language
The 23rd Psalm is known by many folks outside the normal 'church culture', it is the Shepherd-Psalm and I wonder what image there is in the minds of so many of this 'Shepherd' and his sheep? Now please turn to this Psalm in Holy Writ and note the second word is LORD, not Lord. The One who is being referred to is none other than the great eternal YAHWEH, the LORD God Almighty. As Christians He is the One who looks after us, He is the One who is always with us, He is the One who will guide us through all the difficulties of life, yes the great 'I AM that I AM' whatever our circumstances
Now we turn to the New Testament and observe that the wonderful title of the Son of God is written as, 'Our Lord Jesus Christ', please pause for a few moments as we consider this. Not once is our Jesus referred to as LORD,does this mean He is inferior to The LORD God Almighty and we know from theScriptures that he is not, so why is this?
As I understand this matter it speaks of our dear Lord Jesus in His humiliation, just dwell on the first few verses of Isaiah c53, for me the complete answer is there. Our dear Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of the Father became as man but not identical in every way.The birth of Jesus was different and He had no sin at all, He was and is the Impeccable Christ because He was God's Son.Through this same Jesus as we become Christians we will one day be with Him and be like Him but not identical
Our Lord Jesus is one with theFather, 'He that hath seen me hath seen The Father' and our great LORD God Almighty has nothing more to say to mankind regarding his salvation than what He has expressed in His Son, please meditate on Hebrews c1 v1 to 3.If our Lord Jesus was not the Son of God and not impeccable then there would be a work beyond the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, how dare we think like this?
Our Lord Jesus Christ is 'The ONLY begotten Son of The Father', as we see Him by faith we see The Father, He is 'The brightness of The Father's glory', 'The express image of His person, 'Upholding all things by the word of His power', 'When He had by Himself purged our sins, He sat down at the right hand ofThe Father', and I now paraphrase Colossians c2 v9 'He never lost anything of what He was in what He became'.Our great LORD God Almighty and ourselves as Christians look forward to that wonderful day when we will fully understand that, 'God hath highly exalted Him, given Him a name which is above every other name. That at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of things in heaven, things in earth and things under the earth, and that every tongue will confess tat HE is Lord to the glory of God The Father'
Yes and every knee will bow, this will either be in worship or judgment
